Blackjack – also referred to as ‘twenty one’ and ‘pontoon’ – is a card game that is generally found in a casino with players trying their luck on achieving the elusive ‘twenty one’. It is commonly presumed that the game started in France through the 17th century. However, as with most other betting games the precise development of the game is still a mystery.
Black jack was brought to the United States after the French Revolution, but the game did not become favored in the betting houses until the house provided payouts as a bonus. This was the only way that appeared to get players gambling on black jack. One variant on the bonus payout was for a player to make ‘twenty-one’ with the black jack card (worth ten points) and an ace (valued at 11 points). With the growing popularity of the game the pay outs were canceled but the name of the game ‘blackjack’ remained.
Pontoon is not simply about acquiring a straight ‘21′, but the main adventure is to beat the dealer without going ‘bust’. The casino certainly has a house edge over the blackjack players over the long run, but with twenty-one the gambler holds on to an element of choice.
Since nineteen thirty one when America first approved wagering, twenty-one has developed into a classic casino game. Furthermore, it is the blending of both skill and mathematics utilized in blackjack that has made the game massively popular.
